EDUCATION: A JONAH IN THE BELLY OF SOCIAL MEDIA
EDUCATION: A JONAH IN THE BELLY OF SOCIAL MEDIA
It is no doubt that the reading habits of our youths have been drastically washed down the drain as a result of the emergence of technology and the birth of social media. Reading as we know is an essential factor that forms the foundations of greatness in everyone’s life irrespective of status, gender and age. One is helped by it to develop strategically and it is of great importance when trying to pass an examination. The introduction of phones, computers, laptops, and the wrong usage of all forms of communication technology is one of the major reasons for the dwindling rate at which students read nowadays. Social Medias such as BBM, WhatsApp, Instagram, 2go, Facebook, Snapchat, Badoo, Youtube, Twitter and so on and in fact the use of the internet as a whole has been the major obsessions of most Nigerian youths. Even though it also has some positive impacts, we cannot underestimate the fact that the social media is making students’ education suffer. These days many students now have access to the GSM unlike it was in the olden days and they waste their time on it by chatting and surfing the internet for non- educative information. Youths are now glued to their phones all day, making them loose the sense of time. During classes, seminars and even in the library, students are seen pressing their phones with the false belief that their phones are catalysts for easy assimilation when reading. Some are even seen with their earpieces plugged in while they hum out the songs they are listening to when studying which reduces their rates of assimilation and act as a source of disturbance to others around them. Students nowadays search for valueless information in a bid to know what is going on in the world and to be current with events. It is either they are always seen on the internet reading, browsing and reading fashion and social blogs. There is a heavy decline in students’ passion to read for pleasure and enjoyment but instead, they prefer to seek pleasure and enjoyment from the media by streaming videos on social Medias and playing with their mobile phones. The main aim of students’ reading now is just to pass examination and not to gain knowledge for knowledge sake. This indeed has reduced the vast usage and development of the brain. Students who so much devote their time to networking have a great tendency of having low grades, poor academic performance and become unsuccessful and dullards. In the area of writing; the social media has disrupted the writing skills of students. These days, students no longer know how to write long essays because most of them are no longer interested in reading novels and storybooks that may aid their development in writing. The internet is filled with short stories and write-ups with a lot of abbreviations and students who pick interest in reading them will not have the real skill needed for writing. Also, due to the nature by which messages and chats are written; students have inculcated the habit of writing in shorthand where ‘the’ is now ‘d’, ‘doing’ is now ‘duin’ , ‘morning’ is now ‘mrin’; constructing incomplete sentences and few lines, and this has gone far in affecting their grammar, punctuation, communication and writing skills. These attitudes affect many of them in classes and during exams and tests. Abbreviations and short incomplete sentences are being written which may not make sense to the examiner and thus lead to failure. More examples of such are ‘k’ instead of ‘okay’, ‘cz’ instead of ‘because’, and so many of them. Some students even forget to spell a word correctly due to their familiarity with shorthand when chatting. Furthermore, students no longer pay attention to details and research since they have the faith that they can always check up on anything they need online. In the course of doing this, there is a limited use of libraries and research institutes. The retentive memory is no more put into use. Students are now lazy in keeping information like dates, notes, and key points upstairs. They are sure that the information needed can be browsed up. Even if they are asked any question or important events and dates, they will not try to stress out their brains; rather they bring out their phones to search for it. Students are now exposed to vices and dirty sites like the pornography sites, in the course of browsing. Since children like practicing what they see, they tend to practice all that they saw and read on the internet. They engage themselves in all these things to the detriment of their education. In conclusion; Education is indeed a Jonah in the belly of social media which must be vomited else the havoc it will cause in years to come will be incurable. Therefore, the negative impacts should be eroded while the positive ones should be uplifted. Time spent on social network should be reduced. There should be a moderation in student’s access to social media. Parents should know the right age to give their children mobile phones and if need be that there must be a means of communication, then a family telephone should be made available, hence, they should reduce the hours their children spend in front of televisions, games and on phones. What they see and browse should be regulated if possible; the phones should be seized when exams are near. Educative programs and news should be encouraged while immoral scenes in home videos and on the internet should be preached against. Letter writing and essay contest should be practiced and encouraged. By this, the reading culture will be improved which leads to Academic progress and the negative aspects of the social media should be kept from influencing students education.IGONO Abel Raphael
